What Is Mishkan David?

Part II

Mishkan LogoIn my last blog, I talked about the fact that there are two significant meanings to the name I have chosen for this site. The first was the fact that the term is used in Scripture to describe the restoration of the fallen House of David when the Messianic Kingdom will be established, and the throne restored to the dynastic heir—King Messiah.

The second is my topic for today.

There is a theme that runs throughout the Bible. I have concluded that it is the key theme, serving as the focal point for interpreting the entire Bible. It is a saying that most people know, but most don’t seem to be aware of its pervasive nature. It is repeated some 18 times—the number meaning “life” in Hebrew! It occurs in the Torah, in the prophets, and in the writings. It is everywhere! What is this all-important phrase? Let’s take a look…

Shemot/Exodus 6:6-8

Therefore say to the children of Israel: ‘I am the LORD; I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, I will rescue you from their bondage, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great judgments. I will take you as My people, and I will be your God. Then you shall know that I am the LORD your God who brings you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians. And I will bring you into the land which I swore to give to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; and I will give it to you as a heritage: I am the LORD.’ “

Vayikra/Leviticus 26:11,12

I will set My tabernacle among you, and My soul shall not abhor you. I will walk among you and be your God, and you shall be My people.

Yirmeyahu/Jeremiah 7:23

But this is what I commanded them, saying, ‘Obey My voice, and I will be your God, and you shall be My people. And walk in all the ways that I have commanded you, that it may be well with you.’

Yirmeyahu/Jeremiah 11:3-5

Say to them, ‘Thus says the LORD God of Israel: “Cursed is the man who does not obey the words of this covenant which I commanded your fathers in the day I brought them out of the land of Egypt, from the iron furnace, saying, ‘Obey My voice, and do according to all that I command you; so shall you be My people, and I will be your God,’ that I may establish the oath which I have sworn to your fathers, to give them ‘a land flowing with milk and honey,’ as it is this day.” ‘ “

And I answered and said, “So be it, LORD.”

Yirmeyahu/Jeremiah 24:7

Then I will give them a heart to know Me, that I am the LORD; and they shall be My people, and I will be their God, for they shall return to Me with their whole heart.

Yirmeyahu/Jeremiah 30:22

You shall be My people, And I will be your God. “

Yirmeyahu/Jeremiah 31:1

“At the same time,” says the LORD, “I will be the God of all the families of Israel, and they shall be My people.”

Yirmeyahu/Jeremiah 31:33-36

“But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days,” says the LORD: “I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. No more shall every man teach his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, ‘Know the LORD,’ for they all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them, says the LORD. For I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more.”

Thus says the LORD, Who gives the sun for a light by day, The ordinances of the moon and the stars for a light by night, Who disturbs the sea, And its waves roar (The LORD of hosts is His name): “If those ordinances depart From before Me, says the LORD, Then the seed of Israel shall also cease From being a nation before Me forever.”

Yirmeyahu/Jeremiah 32:38-40

They shall be My people, and I will be their God; then I will give them one heart and one way, that they may fear Me forever, for the good of them and their children after them. And I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn away from doing them good; but I will put My fear in their hearts so that they will not depart from Me.

Yechezkel/Ezekiel 11:19,20

Then I will give them one heart, and I will put a new spirit within them, and take the stony heart out of their flesh, and give them a heart of flesh, that they may walk in My statutes and keep My judgments and do them; and they shall be My people, and I will be their God.

Yechezkel/Ezekiel 36:26-28

I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them. Then you shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers; you shall be My people, and I will be your God.

Yechezkel/Ezekiel 37:23,24

They shall not defile themselves anymore with their idols, nor with their detestable things, nor with any of their transgressions; but I will deliver them from all their dwelling places in which they have sinned, and will cleanse them. Then they shall be My people, and I will be their God. David My servant shall be king over them, and they shall all have one shepherd; they shall also walk in My judgments and observe My statutes, and do them.

Yechezkel/Ezekiel 37:26-28

Moreover I will make a covenant of peace with them, and it shall be an everlasting covenant with them; I will establish them and multiply them, and I will set My sanctuary in their midst forevermore. My tabernacle also shall be with them; indeed I will be their God, and they shall be My people. The nations also will know that I, the LORD, sanctify Israel, when My sanctuary is in their midst forevermore.” ‘ “

Yo’el/Joel 2:26,27

You shall eat in plenty and be satisfied, And praise the name of the LORD your God, Who has dealt wondrously with you; And My people shall never be put to shame.  Then you shall know that I am in the midst of Israel: I am the LORD your God And there is no other. My people shall never be put to shame.

Zecharyah/Zechariah 8:8

I will bring them back, And they shall dwell in the midst of Jerusalem. They shall be My people And I will be their God, In truth and righteousness.’

2 Corinthians 6:16

And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God. As God has said: “I WILL DWELL IN THEM AND WALK AMONG THEM. I WILL BE THEIR GOD, AND THEY SHALL BE MY PEOPLE.”

Hebrews 8:10

FOR THIS IS THE COVENANT THAT I WILL MAKE WITH THE HOUSE OF ISRAEL AFTER THOSE DAYS, SAYS THE LORD: I WILL PUT MY LAWS IN THEIR MIND AND WRITE THEM ON THEIR HEARTS; AND I WILL BE THEIR GOD, AND THEY SHALL BE MY PEOPLE.

Revelation 21:3,4

And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.”

In case you haven’t figured out from these numerous quotations, the important phrase is, “I will be their God, and they shall be my people”. Do you see just how life-changing this is? The Creator of the Universe desires to have an intimate relationship with humanity. He starts with Israel, and then promises the same to each individual believer who comes to Him as a grafted-in member of Israel.

Mishkan LogoSome of these passages actually link the re-establishment of the Tabernacle with the idea of Hashem dwelling with his people. Thus, the significance of the name I have chosen—Mishkan David. We believers are the dwelling place of the Almighty—we share in intimate relationship with him, and we represent him to the world around us. We are the modern manifestation of God on earth.

We are the Mishkan.
